Rat & Mouse Control Sydney

Rats and mice do real damage, chewing wiring, spreading disease and breeding fast in roof voids and wall cavities. We clear them with a proper program, then seal the gaps so they cannot come back.

A rodent problem rarely stays small. Rats and mice breed quickly, and a few that move into the roof in autumn can become a serious infestation by winter. Beyond the noise and the mess, they gnaw through electrical wiring, which is a genuine fire risk, and they spread disease through their droppings and urine.

Bob Pest Control clears rats and mice across Bankstown, Liverpool, Fairfield and the wider South West. We do more than scatter a bit of bait. We find how they are getting in, treat the active areas safely, and seal the entry points so the problem is actually solved rather than paused.

Know the Culprit

Sydney Rat and Mouse Species

Three rodents account for almost every job we see across the South West. Each lives differently, which changes where we treat.

Most Common

Roof Rat

A nimble climber, also called the black rat. It nests up high in roof voids and ceilings, which is why so many people first hear it overhead at night.

Ground Level

Norway Rat

The larger brown rat. It burrows at ground level, under slabs, in gardens and around drains and the subfloor, rather than climbing.

Fast Breeder

House Mouse

Small and curious, nesting in wall cavities and cupboards. They breed very fast, so a couple of mice can become a real problem in weeks.

Spotting the Problem

Signs of Rodent Activity

Rodents are mostly active at night, so you often notice the evidence before you see one. These are the giveaways.

Droppings

Small dark droppings along walls, in cupboards and in the roof void.

Noises at Night

Scratching or scurrying in the ceiling and walls after dark.

Gnaw Marks

Chewed wiring, food packaging, skirting and stored items.

Smear Marks

Greasy brown marks along the runways they use again and again.

Musty Smell

A sharp, ammonia-like odour that builds as numbers grow.

Nests

Shredded paper, insulation and fabric tucked into hidden corners.

How We Treat

Our Rodent Treatment Process

A complete program of baiting, trapping and exclusion, because clearing the rodents and sealing the gaps go hand in hand.

1

Inspect & Identify

We work out which rodent it is, how many, and where they are getting in and nesting.

2

Bait & Trap

We place bait in tamper-resistant stations and set traps in the active areas, kept safely out of reach.

3

Seal Entry Points

We find and block the gaps, pipes and eaves gaps they use, which is the part most people miss.

4

Follow-Up

We check back to confirm the activity has stopped and top up where a heavy infestation needs it.

The Usual Hotspot

Roof Void Treatment

In Sydney, the roof void is where most rat problems live. Roof rats are agile climbers that follow tree branches, fences and pipes up to the roofline, then slip in through surprisingly small gaps in the eaves and around penetrations. Once inside, the warm, undisturbed ceiling space is the perfect nesting spot.

We treat the roof void directly, placing bait and traps where the rats are active, and just as importantly we trace and seal the entry points feeding the problem. Sealing those gaps is what stops a fresh family of rats simply replacing the last one a few weeks later.

Common Entry Points

  • Gaps in the eaves and roofline
  • Around pipes, cables and air-con penetrations
  • Overhanging branches that reach the roof
  • Weep holes and gaps in brickwork
  • Damaged vents and broken tiles
Why It Keeps Coming Back

Why DIY Traps Don't Work for Infestations

A couple of snap traps from the hardware store can catch the odd mouse, and for a single stray that is often enough. The trouble starts with an actual infestation. Rodents breed faster than you can trap them, so for every one you catch there are several more breeding out of sight. You end up emptying traps for weeks while the numbers barely move.

There are two other problems. Rats in particular are wary of new objects, so they often avoid traps and shop-bought bait altogether. And even if you knock the numbers down, doing nothing about the entry points means a new group simply moves into the same warm roof void. A professional program clears the active rodents and seals the way in, which is the combination that actually ends it. Our guide on how to get rid of rats covers what you can do alongside a treatment.

Common Questions

Rodent Control FAQs

The questions we hear most about getting rid of rats and mice.

How do I know if it is rats or mice?
Size is the quickest clue. Mouse droppings are small, like grains of rice, while rat droppings are larger. Mice tend to stay near their nest, whereas rats range further and you are more likely to hear them in the roof. We confirm the species during the inspection. See our rat and mouse pages for more.
Are rodent baits safe around pets and kids?
We place bait inside tamper-resistant stations and put them where children and pets cannot reach, such as the roof void or secured points. We also take pets and local wildlife into account when choosing and placing products, and will talk you through it before we start.
What about a dead rodent smell in the wall?
It can happen occasionally with any rodent treatment, since they do not always die out in the open. The smell passes within a week or two. We plan bait placement to reduce the chance, and can advise on managing it if it occurs.
How long does it take to get rid of rodents?
Most jobs are well under control within one to two weeks. A large or established infestation can take a little longer and may need a follow up visit, which we will flag upfront.
Do you seal the entry points too?
Yes, and it is one of the most important parts of the job. Clearing the rodents without sealing the gaps just leaves the door open for the next lot. We identify the entry points and proof them as part of the treatment.
Why aren't my own traps working?
For a real infestation, rodents breed faster than traps can catch them, and rats often avoid unfamiliar traps. Without sealing the entry points, new rodents keep arriving. A professional program tackles all of that at once. There is more in our rat guide.
