Emergency Pest Control: What to Do

Most pest problems can wait for a scheduled visit. A few cannot. When a pest situation turns urgent or dangerous, knowing the right first steps, and what not to do, keeps everyone safe while help is on the way. Here is how to handle the common pest emergencies.

A pest emergency is any situation where there is a risk to safety, a serious health concern, or a problem spreading fast enough that waiting would make it much worse. The golden rule across all of them is the same: stay calm, keep people and pets clear of the danger, and do not put yourself at risk trying to be a hero. Here is what to do in four common scenarios.

What Counts as a Pest Emergency?

Not every pest sighting is urgent, so it helps to know the difference. A few stray ants or a single spider can wait for a normal treatment. A situation becomes an emergency when there is a genuine safety risk, such as a wasp nest near where people gather or a dangerous spider in a child's room, when there is a health risk, like rodents contaminating food, or when a problem will spread rapidly if ignored, as bed bugs do. If a pest is putting someone's safety or health at immediate risk, treat it as urgent and act straight away rather than waiting.

A Wasp Swarm or Nest

Wasps become aggressive when their nest is threatened, and unlike bees they can sting repeatedly. If you disturb a nest you can face a swarm, which is genuinely dangerous. The right response is to move away calmly rather than flailing or swatting, get everyone indoors or well clear, and keep children and pets away from the area.

Do not try to knock down or treat a wasp nest yourself. It is one of the most common ways people end up with multiple stings, and shop-bought sprays often just provoke the nest. A wasp nest needs professional removal.

If someone has a reaction

Some people are severely allergic to stings. If anyone shows signs of a serious reaction after a sting, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness, call 000 immediately.

A Snake Sighting

First, an important point: snakes are a protected native species in New South Wales, and we do not catch or remove them. They are also best left well alone. Most snake bites happen when people try to catch or kill a snake, so the safest thing you can do is keep your distance.

If you see a snake, keep everyone and all pets well away, and if it is safe to do so, keep an eye on where it goes from a distance. Do not approach it, corner it, or attempt to catch or kill it. Instead, call a licensed snake catcher, or contact a wildlife rescue service such as WIRES, who are trained to relocate snakes safely and legally.

If someone is bitten

Treat any snake bite as a medical emergency. Call 000 immediately, keep the person as still and calm as possible, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage if you are able, and follow the operator's instructions while you wait for help.

Rats in a Food Area

Rodents in a kitchen, pantry or any food-handling area are an urgent problem, because they contaminate food and surfaces and can spread disease. For a business handling food, it is also a serious compliance and reputation issue. This is not a situation to leave to a couple of traps and hope.

In the meantime, remove and securely store any exposed food, and clean affected surfaces carefully. When cleaning up droppings, never sweep or vacuum them dry, as that can send particles into the air. Wear gloves, dampen the area with disinfectant first, wipe it up, ventilate the space, and wash your hands well afterwards. Then get a professional onto it quickly to deal with the infestation properly and seal up how they got in.

Discovering Bed Bugs

Finding bed bugs is alarming, but the worst thing you can do is panic and start moving things around, because that spreads them. Resist the urge to throw out your mattress or furniture, since dragging infested items through the home and building can spread bed bugs further, and most items are treatable anyway.

Instead, avoid moving belongings from the affected room into other rooms, bag up and hot-wash bedding and affected clothing, and avoid DIY sprays, which rarely work and can scatter the problem. Then arrange a professional assessment as soon as you can. Bed bugs only get harder to clear the longer they are left, so acting quickly genuinely pays off.
