Funnel-Web Spider Treatment Sydney

The Sydney funnel-web is one of the most dangerous spiders in the world, and our region is its home turf. If they are turning up around your property, here is how to recognise them, what to do about a bite, and how we reduce the risk.

Know What You Are Looking At

Sydney Funnel-Web Identification

The Sydney funnel-web is a solid, glossy spider, dark brown to black, usually somewhere between one and a half and three and a half centimetres in body length. It has a smooth, shiny upper body with no clear pattern, and large fangs that point straight down, which it can use with real force.

The males are the ones to worry about most. They leave their burrows in the warmer months to search for a mate, which is when they wander into yards, garages and homes. They are more venomous than the females and far more likely to be the spider you actually encounter.

Key Features

  • Glossy, dark brown to black body with no pattern
  • Body length around 1.5 to 3.5cm, solid and robust
  • Large downward-pointing fangs
  • Rears up when threatened rather than running
  • Males wander in the warmer, humid months
Around the Home

Where They Hide in SW Sydney

Funnel-webs love cool, moist, sheltered spots. Western Sydney gardens give them plenty, and after rain the wandering males end up in some surprising places.

Rockeries & Gardens

Burrows under rocks, logs and dense, damp garden beds.

Subfloors

Cool, humid spaces under the house where moisture sits.

Garages & Sheds

Among stored items, and along the cool edges of the floor.

Shoes & Laundry

Wandering males crawl into shoes and clothing left outside or in the laundry.

Pool Skimmer Boxes

They can survive in water for hours, so they often turn up in pools and skimmer boxes.

Damp, Shaded Areas

Anywhere cool and moist, especially after summer rain.

Funnel-Web Bite First Aid

A funnel-web bite is a medical emergency. Call 000 immediately.
  • 1

Call 000 straight away and keep the bitten person as calm and still as possible. Movement spreads venom faster.

  • 2

Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage. Bandage firmly over the bite, then wrap the entire limb with a broad bandage.

  • 3

Splint the limb to keep it completely still, and keep the person lying down and calm while you wait for help.

  • 4

Note the time of the bite. Effective antivenom is available, so getting to hospital quickly makes all the difference.

  • This is general first aid information only and is not a substitute for professional medical training or advice. Always follow the directions of 000 and current guidance from St John Ambulance or your doctor.

    How We Help

    Our Treatment Approach

We cannot promise a yard will never see another funnel-web, but a proper treatment significantly reduces the numbers and the risk around your home.

    Targeted Residual Treatment

We treat the harbourage areas around the home, the perimeter and the spots where ground-dwelling spiders travel.

    Dusting Sheltered Voids

Fine dust goes into subfloor, cracks and other cool, damp spaces where funnel-webs shelter.

    Seasonal Timing

We recommend treating ahead of the warmer months when the males begin to wander, for the best protection.
